In 1981, Hennesy, in the Stanford University was working in a processor that allowed segmentation

In 1984, Hennesy leaves Stanford to create his own company: MIPS Computer Systems

MIPS Versions

  • In 1985, The first processor is released R2000 (MIPS I) of 32 bits
  • In 1988, The R3000 is released as an update of the MIPS I
  • In 1991, The R4000 was released as the MIPS III for 64 bits. His main client was SGI
  • In 1992, SGI bought MIPS Computer Machines and renamed it as MIPS Technologies
  • In this decade the company gave licenses for third-party vendors, this ones released their own implementations of the architecture
  • In 1999, more versions are released such as MIPS32 (MIPS II) and MIPS64 (MIPS V)
Many companies used this system in their main products over the following years
